The developments in connection with the Gusen Memorial in recent years mark a turning point in the significance of this site in the Austria´s culture of remembrance. Following the purchase of substantial pieces of land on the site of the former Gusen concentration camp by the Republic of Austria, a participatory process was launched. The resulting masterplan was presented to the public in October 2023 and met with broad approval.

Based on the insight from this participatory process, the Gusen Memorial Committee and the Mauthausen Memorial have now decided to work together even more closely and with immediate effect to organise the commemorations in Gusen jointly. For more than three decades, the work of remembrance in Gusen has been carried out mainly by the Gusen Memorial Committee and the last survivors. We firmly belive that this partnership-based approach will carry the work of remembering the victims of the former Gusen concentration camp into the future in a worthy manner.

The first remembrance ceremony organised in cooperation will take place on 4 May 2024 at 5 pm on the former roll call square in Gusen.

A detailed programme will follow soon.
