Jury evaluation
In general, the recommendations for revisions and development in the second stage of the competition have been insufficiently incorporated.
Architectural and artistic solution
With regard to how design is used to reference the historical significance of the site, the focus on the stone industry is considered excessive. Furthermore, gabions are viewed as a conventional material that fails to give adequate aesthetic expression to the stone industry.
The lantern structures (‘Room of Silence’ and at the arrival building) bear no conceptual relationship to the site’s history. In general, their function remains unclear, despite being a key design feature. The lantern is disproportionately large in relation to the stone crusher, giving the ‘Room of Silence’ an exaggerated appearance that inappropriate. The ‘Room of Silence’ retains its museum-like character, which undermines its artistic qualities.
The Corten steel panels that form part of the semantic link, used as proposed, are seen as a conventional stylistic element.
Urban planning solution
The large and solid effect of the gabions was not addressed in the revisions, despite the jury’s recommendations.
Functional solution
The visitor route at the roll call square, which at times retraces its steps (path there and back), fails to create a continuous, coherent circular walk as specified in the general criteria.
Sustainability and energy efficiency
The plans and texts contain no statement on sustainability.
Cost estimate
The submitted cost estimate is plausible and transparent. The estimated costs fall below the specified budget.
Implementation stages
The implementation phases were set out in a plausible manner and fit within the specified time frame.
